We were able to obtain more evidence to back up our investigations and show there is a presence of non-human entities in Vieques. The following testimony is just an example of such presence. There are many other such accounts in the book.

We spoke with Mrs. Mercedes Sanes and her husband, Mr. Luis Ortiz, who for ma-ny years worked in maintenance at the facilities of Sun Beach and who is also dedicated to fishing on a part time basis. The couple was typical of people from the island of Vieques, very friendly. They agreed to our interview.

“Now that you ask us about this,” Mr. Ortiz said, “let me tell you that I have seen strange objects in the sky. They are big and very luminous, and are always followed or escorted by four other similar objects much smaller in size. The escorts are luminous, as well.
“I have seen them at a distance. They are bigger than my Jeep that measures some six feet long. That gives you an idea of the size of those things.

“I have always seen them about 9:00 or 9:30 at night, often when I am working at Sun Bay. They come flying out of the west towards the east of Vieques, heading to the area of Camp García and the Navy bombing range.

“On one occasion,” added Mr. Ortiz, “around 1988, I saw not one, but two of those objects, each one followed by a row of smaller luminous objects. They went flying towards the east, in the direction of the camp, and a little while later, two military jets passed in the same direction. The jets were surely from Roosevelt Roads base.

“Well, the point is that the jets headed in that direction, and a little while later explosions could be heard. That was around 8 pm. I thought, at first, that they were doing some exercises at the bombing range.
“Half an hour later, one of the objects returned, flying back towards the west. It was not the two that passed originally, only one... the jets were not heard from or seen again.

“You know something? I remember now that there were no military practices that day. What I saw was not during exercises. That was strange because they had red flags at the entrance to Camp García, and the Navy only places those flags when they are doing practices. The flags are placed to warn everyone that entering the area is prohibited due to the dangerous nature of the exercises. Apparently, they didn’t want anyone in there, and who knows, it could have been to prevent anyone from seeing those craft in there.”

But if this was important, what Mr. Ortiz said next was even more significant.

Lighting a cigarette, he began smoking it nervously and continued, “Have you heard about the little men some people say they’ve seen here in Vieques? Well, it’s true because I’ve seen them myself near Kianí Lagoon. And not just me, but just about everyone who goes fishing in the Kianí Lagoon has seen them. We would often go fishing at night. These creatures are very fast, and they are incredibly agile, moving very quickly.”

We asked him if he could describe what he saw.

“They look slender, with thin arms and legs. They are pale, a white or grey color, and very small. They are not more than three or three and a half feet tall, have a face like a human being, more or less, with eyes, a small mouth and nose, but flattened, not like ours.

“Their eyes are dark. They do not have hair. Their heads are quite big for the size of their bodies.”

Ortiz added that when they went to the Kianí Lagoon, located in the west end of Vieques, they would always see several of these creatures standing on the mangroves trees roots at a distance of 10 ft. “We would see a few,” he said, “but as we approached further they would run at incredible speed and dive into the water of the lagoon.”

Considering this important statement by Mr. Ortiz, we must make several comments which will assist the reader in analyzing this information.

The Kianí Lagoon is situated next to a reserve or natural bird refuge, and although the area was recently “handed over” by the Navy to the people of Vieques, however, access to the area has been restricted by federal authorities. The reason for this restriction is that the Kianí Lagoon and the land around it are allegedly severely contaminated with toxic chemicals and heavy metals due to the armaments the Navy kept in the region.

Is this really why the Kianí Lagoon area was being restricted? It is also possible that the real reason might be the authorities want to keep the people of Vieques from knowing that they are co-existing on their island with non-human entities, and that these entities are found mostly in areas controlled by the U.S. Navy?

This is exactly the type of situation that has been taking place in the southwestern region of Puerto Rico near the Cartagena Lagoon (already mentioned in previous chapters) and along the coastline in that area.
Ortiz assured us that on every occasion when he and others saw the creatures near the Kianí Lagoon, no one tried to attack the beings or show any hostility towards them.

“They simply allowed us to see them,” he said, “and then they would run and jump into the water. They did no harm to us and never attacked us. If they are here, and they surely are because I have seen them, they have never harmed anyone...”
